Dedolight International ‘LIGHTING TUTORIAL’ Competition

Registration is free. Open for everyone: from students, amateurs to seasoned DOP. You can work as a group, or as an individual. Multiple entries is allowed.

Dedolight lighting kits to be provided for participants perusal, loaned maximum of 1 week.

Competition starts July 01 to September 31 2015.

1. You can win

We will have more than 30 prizes (motivated by the 30th anniversary of dedolight). The total value of the prizes is approx. Euro 100,000.

Many of the winning videos / entries, but also some of the ones that don’t win may become part of our series of lighting tutorials.

Of course you can publish your own entries freely, but you will also allow us to publish them within our series of tutorials. This will always be done, showing you as the author of the individual video. Thus you will become a member of our club of lighting teachers.

2. Who can participate

Seasoned and experienced directors of photography, lighting cameramen, gaffers, photographers, students, any newcomer – no limitations.

Work on your own or within a group.

The entry could also come from a department of a media or film school; and if the teachers want to make this a part of their regular curriculum, that would also be welcome.

Each entry will be considered for a prize, regardless whether the entry is from one author or a group.

3. How

  • Register with the agent / distributor for dedolight in your country, or a participating dealer.
  • We will temporarily supply (through the responsible agent or distributor) a lighting kit for your work.
  • With your distributor / dealer you will have to arrange a date and duration, when you want to shoot the competition video and how many days you will need the lighting kit. You also have to arrange shipment details and security. It will be left to the discretion of the dedolight distributor or agent to make such arrangements, also if there are any reasons to decline the cooperation.

4. When

The Competition will run from 1st July through the end of September 2015.

5. Lighting kit supplied for your entry video

The lighting kit for your entry video will be a classic dedolight Portable Studio kit with 5 lights and accessories. Check here for content and description.

6. The Prizes

There will be 30 prizes, including many of our new LED lighting kits, which will allow practically all the lighting options, like the classic dedolight Portable Studio kits, which we will supply for your entry; including accessories for background creation and special effects.

Look at the description and details of the prizes.

The additional advantages of our LED lighting kits – like you find in most of our prizes – are as follows:

  • Low power consumption, making battery-powered lighting possible, no cable on the ground, easier setup
  • Dimming with no color change, very smooth with our proprietory dimming algorithms for smooth dimming, even at the lower end of the output (which is typical for all of our focusing LED lights);
  • Bi-color versions: tunable color temperature from 2700K to 6000K, allowing to adapt to most ambient light situations, simply by turning the control knob;
  • Lower forward heat emission;
  • Longevity of the light source;
  • Maintaining the unique dedolight features of the ‚clean beam concept’ with no stray light
    –   Precision lighting instruments
    –   even light and color distribution
  • the use of all our unique optical light-shaping accessories, which may not all be included in the prizes, but can be added by you later on, like
    –  aspherical wide-angle attachments
    –  imagers / projection attachments
    –  background effect projections with all of our lights, different patterns, different colors – some of these will be included alongside with steel gobos
  • With the focusing LED lights you now have another option –
because of the low heat emission it is now possible to project images that you may have taken a few minutes ago on your iPhone and print on a suitable gel or even taking any effect image that you may find in your computer library, modifying it in Photoshop for off-angle projections – straightening out the keystone effects.
  • wide-angle effects
stretching the clean beam in one defined direction, thus, when putting several lights next to each other, you can create a continuous river of light

Later on, you may further add an endless variety of creative tools, which may not all be included in the prizes you win, but can be bought additionally at any time. This represents a door-opener to an amazing world of an incredible variety of creative effects.

7. Your subject for your video entry

  • Your choice
The situation, style, single person, multiple persons, product, art object or your pet.
  • The Lighting Competiton can be any style.
    Noticeable lighting, even dramatic.
    Gentle, subtle lighting – unnoticeable.
  • Your explanation!!!
How did you choose the placement angle, height, focus and dimming of each individual light.
    Why this way?
Also explain, show and demonstrate less favored positions for each light; what made you choose this particular approach.
Ideally, this will become a learning experience for your viewers.
  • Length
No firm rules, maybe 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Single or multiple entries
More than one entry can be accepted for each participant.
  • Language
If your on-camera statement / explanation is in another language than in English, please provide an English-language translation.

8. Video Upload

Please upload your video on YouTube, Vimeo or any other platform and send the link to your country’s agent/distributor, and at the same time to us at Dedo Weigert Film in Munich within the Competition period.

If needed, don’t forget to include an English translation of the words.

9. Choosing the winners

  • Creative ingenuity
  • Level and quality of your explanation

Creative Commons Licence Examples

11. Handling of the loaned equipment kit

Please handle with reasonable care.

Any accidental damage or any defect due to normal wear and tear will be at our risk.

12. Returning the loaned equipment

To be agreed upon with your supplier / dealer / distributor.

13. Procedure Example

Here you can watch the video, where we will show you one procedure only as an example. This is solely intended to introduce the range of equipment and accessories, which you will find in your competition equipment.

This is not at all an indication of our expectations for your entry.

The competition kit mainly consists of –

  • 2 soft lights (different sizes) and 3 focusing lights with normal accessories;
  • 1 imager / projection attachment
  • A selection of steel gobos and 3 background effect filters
  • 5 lighting stands with a flexible stand extension and many other accessories.

A complete list of this you can find here.

In this example we have a person sitting in front of a neutral background, in a surrounding with little or no ambient light.

We may start with a soft light as key light and try to determine the best angle to catch a reflex in both eyes and still give some feeling of three-dimensionality to the face.

Different angles, away from camera axis may be chosen for a more three-dimensional impression or even dramatic.

Choose a suitable height for the desired effect.

For fill light you may choose a suitable reflective surface (not included in the kit), or a second soft light.

Again, explain choice of angle, position, height for the second light.

On both soft lights, use a louvre / grid to keep light away from the background and the camera, allowing us the separate illumination of the background without any interfering spill from key and fill light.

You may want to dim the intensity on the fill light to achieve the desired contrast ratio between key and fill light.

Choose one of the focusing lights as a back light.

The back light you may first run at full power to define angle and position, and later on dim down to make it less obtrusive.

Balance the back light between hair and shoulders if necessary (different reflective values / brightness) with the barn door, or with the set of half scrims.

The next focusing light you may use as a kicker on the side of the face, which is opposite the key light.

This has to be done with great subtlety. This can help to bring more three-dimensionality / sculpting to the face. Not always necessary, not always desirable.

If you don’t want to use the kicker, you can use this light head as an additional light for accent or background.

Use the remaining focusing light for the background. Create an evenly lit background or a slash of light, using the barn doors with different positioning and orientation.

Use the imager / projection attachment to project a background pattern / steel gobo.

Balance the intensity to not distract from the foreground object.

Use color gel filters to indicate time of the day, be it a blue filter for night effect, or an amber filter (09) for an afternoon sunlight effect.

Especially when using a camera with a small sensor and short focal length, it will be helpful to throw the background projection out of focus to create the illusion of space and depth.

You may also want to use the fourth light to create another layer in background effects, to enhance the feeling of greater distance (three-dimensionality) – if you don’t want to use this light as a kicker.

If you choose any particular color for the background projection, you may also want to use a similar color on the back light and the kicker to create the uniformity of the light character, illuminating the person from the back side.

Instead of the gobo projection you can also use our background effect glasses.

Again, you will see that a completely different character of these projections can be achieved, whether the projection is in focus or thrown out of focus.

A further version can be the ‚sandwich’, combining a steel gobo with such a background effect filter.

All that we have shown here now, has nothing to do with rules, or even any suggestions of what we expect you to do. It is merely one example to run you through the range of equipment and accessories that we will provide to you. How you use them is completely up to you – the subject(s), the situation, the style of lighting, the character. All up to your creative choices.

If you choose to compose your entry with one single light only, that would be perfectly okay.

If you add some additional helping devices, like reflective surfaces or gadgets to further cut or lower the light levels, that is also fine.

If ambient or available light plays a role in your entry, that is okay too.

Just to show you that there are no rules. You are totally free in your creative choices and procedures.

If you would like to take part in our event, please fill in your details in the Event Registration Form below and you will be automatically registered. Event registration must be completed at least six (6) days prior to the event.
